“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7) August 2003 Dear Friend, I trust that all is well with you and your loved ones. We are fine, and enjoying a month full of exciting Ministry. Summer is the perfect time to distribute tracts since people are outdoors shopping, or in the parks, and neighbors are outside sitting on their stoops and talking. “Sitting on their stoops” is a Brooklyn thing, I think. No neighborhood in Brooklyn would be complete if you did not see people congregating on the front steps of their house, discussing life in general, with the people who live next door. We have a marvelous mix of nationalities and races here, and life is interesting and exciting. This is where I was born, and raised, and I absolutely love it here. Brooklyn is also known as the “city of churches.” You can see a church on almost every block where you walk. We have churches of every denomination, and non-denomination. Every child has had to have had at least one experience of a summer camp, or Sunday school even if their parents never entered a church. Children invite their friends, and wonderful memories are set in minds of playing Bible games and winning prizes. Hopefully these memories will come to mind as life unfolds and choices are made. My first encounter with Jesus was when I was eight years old, and bedridden with polio. My teacher had taught me to call on Jesus whenever I was afraid, or lonely, so this is what I did. Day after day, I had nothing to do since I couldn’t walk, so I spoke to Him all day, and at night when I was awake. I remember my mother being very afraid, and crying a lot. I used to tell her not to be afraid because Jesus was going to heal me. How did I know this? I don’t know. I can only imagine that it had to be Jesus giving me hope, and as the Bible says, “a sound mind.” I did not have fear, because I just knew that everything would be okay. And it was. God did heal me, and the doctors were astounded by it. This was the beginning of my walk with Jesus, and I will always be grateful to Him for allowing circumstances in my life to draw me close to Him. How many times do we come across circumstances in life that can tear us apart emotionally if we allow it? Perhaps we lose our job, or our child goes astray, or sickness enters in. In what way do we react? The Christian life is a battle. Satan comes in and tries to destroy us. Where does he attack? Our mind. This is where he tries to get us, to cause us to give up and give in to depression, or anxiety. We try to sleep at night, but thoughts torment us. We find that even getting dressed for the day is a chore, and we lose heart. But wait! We do have hope! In 1 Tim. 6:12 it says, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” What have you confessed? You have confessed Jesus, that He is Lord! You have confessed that Jesus is Who He says He is! What does God’s Word say? It says that He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love, and of a sound mind! God says not to give up! He says to stand firm, and fight the good fight! Today is a new day! Today you can change your attitude from one of hopelessness and despair, to one of hope, and joy and victory! You can smile and praise God for all that He has done, and will do in your life! Glory! Take a deep breath now. Let us take God’s Word and put it into action. When Paul says to Timothy, “Fight the good fight of faith,” can we do less? I read somewhere that there are three A’s to assist in fighting the good fight all the way. 1. Acceptance. We have to realize that suffering has come. God has allowed it for some reason. 2. Attitude. We must positively know that God is Who He says He is, so something good will come from your suffering. 3. Action. Anticipate the victory, but be sure to put on your full armor. The coach always picks the best to play the hardest quarters. This may be your finest hour. Now, begin praying, and praising God! Did you know that praising God is spiritual warfare? When we are praising God, the devil cannot hang around. He has to go. So, out loud, both of us, right now, let us shout “PRAISE THE LORD! Good. Now, are you smiling? As long as we are praising the Lord, we cannot dwell on our problems, the devil has to go, depression and anxiety have to go, and thoughts of defeat have to go. We have opened the door for God to step in! Hallelujah! In 1 Tim. 1:7, Paul says that God has given us a spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind. Power helps us to have confidence in situations. The power given to a President gives him confidence to press in to make the decisions he has to make. In the Spirit realm, God gives us this power to make the choices and decisions that we have to make. Love helps us to deal with difficult people. A sound mind helps us to have self-control and discipline no matter what happens. God has already given us the tools to live by! Let us use them! Let us make the choice today to rise up to our inheritance, and receive all that God has already given us! If you were given an inheritance of a million dollars, and you never claimed it, you would never have it. God has given us an inheritance. Paul prays for the saints in Colossians Chapter One, and he says in verses 11 and 12, that we should be “strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy, giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.” As we walk with Him, growing in our knowledge of Him, our lives will bear fruit, and we will walk in His victory and joy. We will triumph in all circumstances; we will overcome. God bless you, Rev. Barbara Anne Yovino
